Dresses

Anna is rated as a beginner dress which is quick to cut and simple to make.  The pattern includes variations of slash or V neckline as well as featuring a panelled skirt that can be left short or made a dramatic maxi with a thigh high split.

Hawthorn is a classic button up shirt dress combined with a feminine circle skirt.  The fitted bodice and flat collar  give the pattern a vintage charm.  A charming peplum blouse and addition sleeve variations make this a very versatile pattern.

Tiramisu is a knee length knit dress with a mock wrap front, kimono sleeves and half circle skirt.  The well designed pattern includes a customisable midriff section to your measurements, stripe placement guide and proportional bust sizing.  

The Lady Skater is a knit dress with a scooped neckline and 3 simple sleeve variations.  The curved flared knee length skirt sits on the natural waist.

Elisalex is a figure hugging dress designed with little ease that celebrates the female form.  It features a low scoop back, princess seams and a box pleated tulip skirt.  With three sleeve variations this dress is suitable for any season.

Special Mentions

Laurel is a simple shift dress that is easy to sew.  It is a semi loose dress with a fitted bust and back darts.  It lends itself to multiple variations with a free download book for inspiration.

Belladone features and Aline skirt with front flat pleats,  diagonal pockets and cinched at the waist.  The back features a unique cutout and the dress is finished and trimmed with bias binding.

Cambie is a fitted, fully lined dress designed for the pear-shaped figure.  It has sweetheart neckline, cap sleeves and the skirt can be made as a simple A-line or a as a full gathered skirt.

 

Tops

Scout is a very simple a functional woven t-shirt with capped sleeves and scoop neck.  Fitted at the shoulders this top falls into a loose shape below the bust.

Renfrew is a basic knit tee that has the sleeves and body finished with bands.  With three sleeve and neckline variations (Vneck, scoop and cowl)  this pattern is a wardrobe staple.

Archer is a classic button up shirt with long sleeves.  The pattern consists of all a traditional shirt – double yoke, button bands, breast pockets, cuffs, sleeve plackets, pieced collar and collar stand.   It is loose fitting with a variation for an optional gathered lower back. 

Tonic is a simple T-shirt with a flattering neckline designed for petites.  

Briar is a stylish sweater or tee that has a scooped front hem and low curved back hem.  There is a cropped version as well as various neckline finishes, pocket options and sleeve lengths.

Skirts

Moss is a semi fitted fly front skirt with button closure and yoke back.  It sits slightly below the natural waist and can be made as a mini skirt or longer with the additional hem band.. 

Charlotte is a simple well fitting high waisted pencil skirt designed for the hourglass figure.  This sophisticated skirt  has pattern variations of an optional peplum and ruffle at the hem.

Zinnia is a full skirt that has an optional front button placket that can be gathered or made with pleats. With smart additional details like patch or inseam pockets and belt loops this is a very functional pattern.

Everyday Skirt  is a flattering design and very easy to sew.  It  includes practical front pockets and an elasticised waist.

Tania is a modern take on culottes that combine the practicality of shorts with the look of a circle skirt.  The pattern has a fitted waistband with invisible side seam zip.

 

Pants

Oh la Leggings have an elasticised waist with pin-tucks and front and back seam detailing.  These details make this simple pair of leggings something special.

Jalies’ womens Stretch Jeans are a flattering slim fit jean with options for a regular or low rise waist.  They have a flared leg, back and side front pockets and a zip fly with button closure.

Jamie  is a skinny jean with regular waist and front seams.  Unique front pocket detailing with contrast fabric make these a sophisticated pair of jeans.

Thurlow is a modern trouser pattern designed for the pear shaped figure.  Featuring front slash pockets, they sit below the waist with a slightly flared leg.  The pattern also includes a variation for cuffed shorts.

Clover are slim fitting pants with a side zipper.  Inseam pockets are set into the waistband and can be made ankle length or cropped to just below mid calf.

In Summary

These are the Best Independent Sewing patterns of 2013, however not all of these were released last year.  On occasion it can take a while for a good pattern to gain popularity.  Wardrobe basics and simple patterns that can be customised feature predominately on the lists.  

As far as designers go, By Hand London are popular for their dresses, Grainline Studio does a good shirt while Sewaholic and Colette make great patterns in all categories.
